Orlando Sentinel: Enginehead Interview Videos

As part of my position at the Orlando Sentinel’s interactive group, I was tasked with creating a weekly interview-style montage video of a local car enthusiast and his pride and joy. In most cases, I was responsible for: recording the footage of the car, B-roll of the car driving, and the interview; micing the interviewer and capturing the audio; photographing the car and the individual for a photo gallery to accompany the video; identify the 10-15 best photos, edit them, and post them to the Orlando Sentinel’s CMS; and capture the audio and video, edit it together on an Avid or Final Cut machine, and post the video to the CMS.

I have many examples of this work: here are some links to the above-mentioned material.

All video was edited in Avid, Final Cut Pro, or Premiere Pro. All photos were edited in Photoshop.

“Holy Cow” T-Shirt Designs

I developed three freelance designs for a client printing green-themed t-shirts. Each played on a theme of an overused earth, clean energy, and responsible choices to respect the environment. The company didn’t survive for long, so I never got to see the shirts printed. All three designs were created in Illustrator on a short timetable.

Cloudburst: Mashup Demo Mix (2007)

Download

Mixing is becoming increasingly difficult for me. Part of it is due to the number of things I’m balancing (mixing, movie-making, full-time job, novel-writing, video games, and then of course all the other little things in life), but I think a large part is that I feel like I have to best myself; and I really hate it. I know that people love these things without me trying to go out and make the best thing ever. Just look at the star ratings. I gave Flow a six, highest so far, because it was an amazing breakthrough (my first harmonic mixing job). The two following have probably seemed just as good, if not better, to those of you that enjoy them. So why are they scored lower?

To me, Vapor seemed like just more of the same. Not so much better or worse, just more of the same. In that sense, it wasn’t a breakthrough, so I didn’t give it a six.

With Cloudburst, I tried hard to make something new. You’ll hear a lot of song mash-ups, cut effects, generally experimental stuff on my part. Did it work? It sounds better than I anticipated, but not really on the level that Flow just clicked. I still think it’s very enjoyable, very fun to listen through. In that regard, it gets a five.

Orange County: Orange Peel Model

During my tenure at Orange County FL, I was asked to do some mockups for a replacement PeopleSoft login page and some other locations. In trying to create different styles for my supervisor to choose from, I made some mockups of unraveling orange peels. The idea was left on the cutting room floor, but I thought I’d share this screenshot of the LightWave Modeler in which the peel was created.

Vapor: Halloween Mix (2006)

Download Set

The name ‘vapor’ refers to the surface of water, and in that respect, it’s because this mix is designed to fit on top of Flow. If you string the two together, they match key. This was made for Halloween 2006, and was played just like that (first, then on to Flow). I don’t like it as much as Flow (partially because it was rushed), but it’s still pretty good. Still much better than most of my mixes.

Flow: Demo Mix 2006

Download Set

This mix had been a long time coming; with my newfound knowledge of harmonic mixing, track piece selection, and the equalizer marks, I created something I could finally be proud of. Pretty much every fade has something special in store for the listener, and the music is very atmospheric while having a lot of kick for dancing. It might not work as well for an actual dance, but for listening, it’s amazing.
